Well three, Scotch 🥃From the kid building his own computer at 10 to earning $30K in sales commissions at 19 to writing the B2B sales playbook for Best Buy to founding two award-winning MSPs dedicated to cybersecurity, I’ve never met a challenge I couldn’t solve. And the solution is usually doing the work.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, sharing a room with my little brother, playing drums in the church band and watching my parents work hard to keep hold of their piece of the American dream. Sometimes, we struggled, but we always had each other and that’s what mattered. My dad was an insurance salesman and I learned that, when you connect with people on a human level, you can sell anything. When I was 16, my dad passed away from leukemia. Overnight, I became the head of the family. I took a job at McDonalds to help my family and can honestly say the phrase, “Would you like fries with that?” has shaped my life. College never interested me so after high school graduation, I took a job at RadioShack. I started asking if customers wanted a $1.00 cellphone with their purchase and at 19 earned $30,000 in commissions. At RadioShack, I had learned how to spot problems in system security while working in the warehouse, and that understanding of how pieces worked together took me from “Rick, the guy tinkering with your computer when it wouldn’t start up” to “Rick, the guy overseeing a 10,000+ server refresh, at Merrill lynch.” I wrote the sales playbook for Best Buy’s B2B business and oversaw the rollout of what became Geek Squad. All of these jobs serving people and understanding their problems has made me the successful entrepreneur I am today.
